The competitive mindset that drives athletic performance can easily transfer into gambling behaviors—chasing losses, believing in “winning streaks,” and viewing risk-taking as part of the game. Many athletes also face high levels of stress, irregular schedules, and periods of boredom or isolation, especially during injury or off-season, making gambling an appealing escape or thrill. In some locker rooms, gambling is normalized as a bonding activity, blurring the lines between fun and addiction. And with increased exposure to betting sponsorships and the ease of mobile gambling, the risk is higher than ever.
