Gah, it’s our last In Conversation episode for a little while!!! And what a show we have for you today. Tarang Chawla is an Indian-born Australian lawyer, writer and anti-family violence advocate. In 2015, Tarang’s younger sister Nikita was murdered by her then-husband at the age of just 23. In the years since, Tarang has become one of the country’s leading campaigners for gender equality and advocates for women and children’s safety from family violence. In 2017, he was named a Young Australian of the Year finalist in Victoria and has written across topics including men's violence against women, discrimination, racism, masculinity and human rights. Now, Mari boasts over one million Instagram followers and is a New York Times best-selling author too, who has published two books, Am I There Yet and My Inner Sky - the latter of which she wrote while recovering from an unexpected illness that left her paralysed for an entire month while living in Spain. In this chat with Mari, we talk about why she’s so unafraid to harness loneliness, her relationship with grief, and how she manages to write deeply private stories for her public audience without unleashing past trauma. Yumiko, as you’d read in her new memoir Emotional Female, has been an over-achiever her entire life, studying medicine at university and deciding to enter the perilous surgical stream when specialising as a doctor. Only, it was when Yumiko found herself trying to become a surgeon that she encountered the true, brutal nature of Australia’s hospital culture. Yumiko was subjected to such a ridiculous work schedule, colleagues who were unflinching in their coldness, and institutionalised sexism and racism that she was pushed to a mental breakdown in her late twenties, prompting her to take extended leave from her career and spend time as an inpatient in a psychiatric facility. In this chat, we talk about the highs and the lows of being a female doctor in Australia, as well as what can be done to ensure the next generation of female surgeons aren’t pushed to a place they can’t come back from.
