IN CONVERSATION: Celeste Barber

IN CONVERSATION: Celeste Barber

Happy Mondaaaaay everybody! Today on the show, we bring you the remarkable Celeste Barber. We have no doubt you know precisely who Celeste is - she does have 10 million followers across Instagram and Facebook - but we’ll introduce her to you anyway. Celeste began her career as an actress, but over the last six years, has channeled her talent for making people think and laugh into a movement she calls ‘Challenge Accepted’. The premise is simple and brilliant; via her Instagram page, Celeste parodies the content Instagram has become synonymous for - exceedingly thin, obscenely famous women posing in unrealistic and sometimes downright bizarre ways. Celeste’s comedy has made her a local and international sensation: she’s graced the likes of In Style Magazine, penned a best-selling memoir, is the new face of MCoBeauty, and is practically taking over the world, one post at a time. In this chat, we wanted to hear about Celeste’s life before fame, the awkward stages of pursuing a career in the public eye, her relationship with rejection and failure, and what it’s like to build a business off the back of being yourself. For more from Celeste, follow her on Instagram at @celestebarber and check out her podcast, Celeste and Her Best. If you enjoyed this episode, we recommend you listen to our chat with fellow comedian Celia Pacquola. Thank you so much to today’s sponsor, Apple’s new original film, Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry, now streaming exclusively on Apple TV+ (terms apply). Head here to subscribe. BOOK CLUB: Just Like You

Link to this episode in the new The Shameless Book Club feed: https://open.spotify.com/episode/7aYSmwZekgTofjWGy1LGX3?si=7c50e5683df149c5 G’day book club friends!!! This month, we read best-selling author Nick Hornby’s eighth novel, Just Like You. The book follows two protagonists, 22-year-old Joseph and 42-year-old Lucy, who fall in love despite coming from two different worlds. Joseph is a young Black DJ trying to find his place in the world, while Lucy is a white English teacher and mum of two, who has recently separated from her addict ex-husband. This isn’t just the story of a juicy love affair though: after all, the book is set in 2016 and Brexit is the backdrop of their union, meaning conversations about politics and race relations are littered throughout. Today on the show, Mich, Zara, and Annabelle talk about it all: Did Nick Hornby pull off his eighth book? Can a white man write about the experience of a Black man? And, were we pulled towards the romance of Lucy and Joseph? Thank you so much to today’s sponsor, Penguin Books Australia and Emotional Female by Yumiko Kadota. Head here to pick up a copy. If you’d like to share your thoughts on our March pick, ‘The Shadow Box’ by Luanne Rice, record a voice message and send it to hotline@shamelessmediaco.com (that's *CO*.com). IN CONVERSATION: Bridget Malcolm

Helloooooo pals! Today on the show, we bring you the brilliant Bridget Malcolm. Bridget is a classically-trained musician, best known as an international model who walked for Victoria’s Secret in their 2015 and 2016 fashion shows, as well as walking for brands like Ralph Lauren and Stella McCartney. But Bridget’s story in the fashion industry isn’t just one of glitzy catwalks and endless travel. Instead, Bridget spent much of her early and prominent years modelling battling a relentless eating disorder which, for two years, saw her live off little more than protein shakes and steamed vegetables. In this chat, we talk about all of it: her lowest moments, her love of music, her complicated relationship with alcohol, her relatively recent diagnosis of Pre Menstrual Dysphoric Disorder, and how she feels about the modelling industry after everything she’s been through. If this chat raises issues for you, support is available on The Butterfly Foundation's National Support Line, 1800 33 4673. For more from Bridget, follow her on Instagram @bridgetmalcolm and subscribe to her new podcast, Model Mentality on Spotify here. Prying paps and tricky tabloids

Happy Thursday legends!!! On today’s show: Scott Disick is dating… yep, another teenager. Then, Justin Timberlake’s apology, an Aussie magazine’s huge Meghan and Harry blunder, and finally, a big bumper discussion about the Bondi paparazzi: How Aussie tabloids and their seedy photographers are slowly - and insidiously - influencing the way you think about women in the public eye. This week, Mich recommended checking out your nearest plant delivery service, and Zara recommended watching the movie Holding The Man, which you can find on Netflix or Stan. Happy Monday folks! Today on the show, we bring you the vibrant Martha Kalifatidis. You’re likely familiar with the makeup artist and reality star after she appeared in one of the country’s most-watched seasons of Married at First Sight. Yes, she may well be known for a certain **wine throwing** incident, but she also left the show with a huge and fiercely loyal group of fans who fell in love with how confident, unapologetic, and yes - if we may use a buzzword to round this list out - authentic she really is. Oh, and they fell in love with her love story too, after Martha and her Married at First Sight husband Michael defied the reality TV odds, still together more than two years after the show aired. In this chat, we talked about why she decided to go on the show, the dark days she spent in bed when trolling got too much and how Michael changed her life completely. For more from Martha, follow her on Instagram @marthaa__k. If you enjoyed this episode, we recommend you also listen to our chats with Love Island’s Tayla Damir and The Bachelor’s Abbie Chatfield.
