What’s It Really Like to Study at Macquarie University? Paddy Shares His Experience

What’s it actually like to study at Macquarie University, especially if you’re moving away from home, living on campus, and still figuring out whether you’re on the right path?

In this episode of the Choosing Your Uni podcast, Rob Malicki sits down with Paddy at Macquarie University for a grounded and genuinely insightful conversation about student life, belonging, and the messy reality of working out what you really want to study. Paddy grew up in Tamworth, came to Sydney for boarding school, started out in commerce during the COVID years, then had a moment of clarity after tutoring school students and realised that teaching, not business, was where he was meant to be.

It is one of those conversations that works because it is not overly polished. It feels real. Paddy talks openly about the experience of changing degrees, why primary teaching matters to him, and how a few influential male teachers in his own life helped shape the kind of teacher he now wants to become.

Along the way, we also get a really useful window into the broader Macquarie experience. Paddy shares what it is like living in college accommodation, why being on campus can make such a big difference socially and practically, and how Macquarie’s open space, greenery and sense of community give it a very particular feel compared with other Sydney universities.

If you are considering Macquarie, thinking about teaching, or still trying to work out whether the degree you started is actually the degree you want, this episode has plenty in it for you.
