Grace Carter

In this week’s episode I speak to the incredible singer/songwriter that is Grace Carter. This episode was recorded just before the death of George Floyd, however the conversation could not be more relevant in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement. Moving, at the age of 8, to a predominantly white area in the UK with her white mother, but with the absence of her black father, Grace speaks openly of her struggles with navigating her identity in an environment she felt, and was reminded, that she was ‘different’. This episode is a poignant look into the life of a successful young female, both channeling the heartache of her fathers absence, alongside overcoming and embracing an, at times, torturous identity struggle related to the lack of example she was given within the identity she is defined by - by both society, and the industry in which she works. Grace’s music is open, honest and raw - cutting to the heart of difficult issues. This was reflected in this beautifully articulated conversation.
