About Valentine’s Day.

Today, I would like to talk about Valentine’s Day.

In Singapore,

I hear that men often give presents to women.

I have seen people holding flowers on the train.

They were beautiful bouquets.

It makes the day feel a bit romantic.

So, what about Japan?

In Japan, it is the opposite.

Women give chocolate to men.

Not flowers.

Chocolate.

When I was a student, I looked forward to that day.

I thought maybe I might receive some.

At school, I quietly checked my locker.

I also looked inside my desk drawer.

Usually, the popular boys receive many chocolates.

The other boys do not receive many.

I think that is quite common.

In fact, Valentine’s Day became popular in Japan

because of chocolate company promotions.

It was about sixty years ago.

They placed advertisements in newspapers,

and sold special chocolates.

Gradually, more people started buying chocolate.

And it became the event we know today.

So in Japan,

some people do not really know what the original meaning of Valentine’s Day is.

Many simply think of it as a romantic day.

How is it in Singapore?

Some people may be busy with school or work,

and may not have much time for romance.

But at least on Valentine’s Day,

maybe it’s nice to enjoy the moment a little.

Whether it is chocolate or flowers,

it might be a small chance to share your feelings.
