Why do people arrive late?

Today I’d like to talk a little about differences in how people think about time.

Of course, we cannot say everyone is the same.

Even in Japan, some people arrive late to work or school.

Even people who are usually punctual can be five minutes late sometimes.

But compared with people in Singapore, I feel Japanese people are a little stricter about time.

For example, imagine we plan to meet at 1 pm.

In Singapore, people do not always gather exactly at one.

Often it becomes 1:15 or even 1:30.

When I hear the reasons, there are many.

“The bus didn’t come,”

“The traffic was heavy,”

I hear these reasons quite often.

But sometimes I think about this.

Japanese people often think about these things beforehand.

Maybe the bus will not come.

Maybe the road will be busy.

So we leave home a little earlier.

If the meeting time is one,

we might leave home to arrive around 12:45.

So even if something happens, we still have time.

If we arrive early, we may feel a little bored.

But many Japanese people think like this.

It’s okay to be a little bored.

But making a friend wait is not so nice.

Of course, I’m not saying one way is right or wrong.

I think it is simply a difference in thinking.

I always bring a tablet when I go out.

When I wait for friends, I read a book.

So waiting is not really boring for me.

I don’t get angry.

But sometimes I have a small thought.

Maybe many people

expect the bus to arrive at the perfect time,

and the road not to be busy,

and they leave home hoping to arrive exactly on time.

So maybe that is why people arrive a little late each time.

Well, I guess it can’t be helped.

Differences in time sense like this are also an interesting part of living abroad.
