The Dark Truth About the Vampires of New Orleans

Askia sits down with Rose Sinister, a New Orleans vampire historian and tour guide, to dig into the real history of vampires, debunk Hollywood myths, and get into some genuinely dark territory. From Nazi propaganda creating the werewolf-vampire feud to the vampiric Casket Girls locked in a convent attic, this one goes places. Plus, Rose shares the wild story of surviving a 70 mph crash with a broken back.

Rose Sinister is a professional vampire tour guide in the French Quarter, author of 'This Crimson Debt,' and host of the Rose Sinister: Vampires podcast. In this episode, she breaks down the Eastern European origins of vampire hysteria in the 1730s, explains why New Orleans became the vampire capital of America, and gets into the deeply queer roots of vampire literature from 'Carmilla' to Anne Rice's Castro-district-inspired work. She also calls out the tourist behavior happening on cemetery graves (you know who you are).

This isn't your basic vampire explainer. Rose brings the receipts: historical, folkloric, and personal. And yes, she'll tell you why you should never leave a crystal ball uncovered. "Vampires are us. They reflect our fears and our dark desires."
