Beginning in 1977, Wichita resident Ruth Finley became the target of an escalating stalking campaign involving threatening phone calls, disturbing poems, vandalism, fake letters sent to businesses, and violent attacks. As fear of the BTK killer gripped the city, police and the public wondered whether Ruth’s tormentor could be connected to the infamous serial killer.

Over the course of several years, “The Poet” terrorized Ruth and her husband Ed with cryptic rhymes, threats, property damage, and increasingly dangerous encounters. Detectives launched surveillance operations, investigated possible suspects, and devoted enormous resources to the case.

But in 1981, investigators uncovered a truth more shocking than anyone imagined: the stalker they had been hunting did not exist in the way they believed.
