Episode 85: Marriage Series - Fire Yourself from the Job

In Episode 1 of the Marriage Series — We Chose to Stay — I shared something really personal. I told you about 2007, about how close Nate and I came to the end, about what didn't work and what finally did. And I told you that your marriage is worth fighting for.

But today — today we're going to talk about the part that nobody really wants to hear. The part that is also, I promise you, the most freeing thing I have ever learned about marriage.

Here it is: You cannot change your husband. You never could. And the sooner you fire yourself from that job, the sooner your marriage actually has a chance.

1. What is one thought I have about my husband on a regular basis? Is it a fact or an interpretation? What might be another way to see it?
2. Where have I been trying to change, manage, or fix my husband? What has that behavior actually cost me — and our marriage?
3. What does it mean to be 100% responsible for how I show up — not as a burden, but as an act of freedom? What would that look like for me this week?
4. Where am I operating from my false self in my marriage? What fear is underneath that behavior?
5. What would my true self — grounded, secure, loved by God — do differently in my marriage today?
6. What is one thought I could practice this week that would help me feel more connected to my husband — not because he changed, but because I chose it?
7. If I fully believed that how I show up is within my control, what is one thing I would do differently starting tomorrow?
