The "Face Test": It is a simple mechanism. If the thought of the person you are discussing walking into the room makes you lower your voice, change the subject, or feel panic, you are in the wrong. Cowardice hides in the shadows; integrity stands in the light. If you can't say it to their face, you don't have the right to say it at all.
The Self-Audit of Trust: When you gossip about Person A to Person B, you think you are bonding with Person B. You aren't. You are actually teaching Person B that you cannot be trusted. Subconsciously, they know: "If they talk like this about others to me, they will talk like this about me to others." Gossip destroys your own reputation faster than the reputation of your victim.
