Splunk on Sale, Accountant Shortages, and Stimmy Checks Running Dry

Splunk, a leader in cybersecurity and observability software, was acquired by Cisco for $28 billion in cash in September 2023. This was one of the largest deals in the software industry's history, reflecting Cisco's strategic vision to expand its cloud and security offerings. Splunk's products help organizations monitor, analyze, and respond to data from various sources, such as applications, devices, and networks. Cisco plans to integrate Splunk's capabilities into its own platforms, creating a comprehensive solution for customers.

The accounting profession is facing a severe talent shortage, as more than 300,000 U.S. accountants and auditors have left their jobs in the past two years, a 17% decline. The main reasons for this exodus are burnout, low pay, lack of career advancement, and increased automation. Many accountants have switched to other fields, such as finance, consulting, or technology, where they can leverage their skills and experience. The talent gap poses a serious challenge for the accounting industry, which must attract and retain qualified professionals to meet the growing demand for accounting services.

U.S. households built up savings at unprecedented rates following the strong fiscal response and lower consumer spending related to the pandemic. According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the personal saving rate reached a record high of 33.7% in April 2020 and remained above 10% until July 2021. This means that Americans saved more than $2 trillion during this period, which could be used for future consumption or investment. However, some economists warn that the high saving rate may also indicate uncertainty and caution among consumers, who may be reluctant to spend due to the health and economic risks posed by the pandemic.
