Episode 2 - The JFK Assassination Conspiracy Theory

On November 22nd, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was shot in Dallas, Texas. Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested. Two days later, Oswald was shot dead by Jack Ruby before he could stand trial. The Warren Commission concluded that Oswald acted alone. And for over sixty years, a majority of Americans have not believed them.

In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine the most searched and most discussed conspiracy theory in American history. Was JFK's assassination a lone wolf attack by a disturbed ex-Marine? Or was it a coordinated conspiracy involving the CIA, the Mafia, the Cuban exile community, the military-industrial complex, or even Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson?

We examine the famous grassy knoll — the area in front of Kennedy's motorcade from which multiple witnesses reported hearing shots — and the acoustic evidence that led the House Select Committee on Assassinations to conclude in 1979 that Kennedy was probably killed as a result of a conspiracy involving more than one gunman. We examine the single-bullet theory, also called the magic bullet theory, which holds that one bullet caused seven separate wounds in Kennedy and Governor Connally — a trajectory that many ballistics experts have called physically impossible.

We examine the Jack Ruby connection — a man with documented ties to organised crime who killed the only person who could explain why Kennedy was shot. We examine the declassified CIA and FBI documents and what they revealed about the agency's far more detailed knowledge of Lee Harvey Oswald in the months before the assassination than it ever admitted to the Warren Commission.

We also look at the most significant alternative theories: the CIA plot motivated by Kennedy's plans to scale back the agency after the Bay of Pigs disaster, the Mafia connection through figures like Sam Giancana and Carlos Marcello, the Soviet and Cuban involvement theories, and the military-industrial complex theory based on Kennedy's apparent intention to end American involvement in Vietnam.

This is the conspiracy theory that launched a thousand others. It is the one that, more than any other, made Americans distrust their own government. And it remains, sixty years later, genuinely and compellingly unresolved.
