Inside the Australian UFO Archive: Tullamarine, Goulburn, and the Townsville Radar Case

Inside the Australian UFO Archive: Tullamarine, Goulburn, and the Townsville Radar Case

What do Australia’s lesser-known UFO files reveal about how the RAAF monitored unexplained activity in controlled airspace?

In this episode of UFO to UAP Explained, host Matt Tones investigates three cases preserved in the Australian UFO archive: the 1966 Tullamarine incident, the 1954 Goulburn encounter and the 1978 Townsville radar case. Together, they show how unusual aerial reports were treated as aviation and national-security problems during the Cold War and Space Race.

The Tullamarine file records an unidentified aerial object near a major Melbourne airport, although the surviving public trail provides few details. The Goulburn case offers stronger evidence: Royal Australian Navy pilot Lieutenant J. A. O’Farrell reported two bright lights during a night flight while radar operators at Nowra detected three echoes. Townsville reveals the investigative process itself, with multiple radar contacts, an attempted interception and later correlation with known civil aircraft.

Were these encounters extraordinary craft, unidentified aircraft or temporary failures of classification? Discover why trained witnesses, radar corroboration, controlled airspace and official RAAF records make these cases valuable—not as proof of extraterrestrial origin, but as evidence of how Australia documented and managed uncertainty in the sky.
