4:20 pm It’s been 47 years since METRO Houston was officially launched in January 1979 and it has mademajor strides in encouraging people to ride its buses and trains. With the agency’s $1.6 billion annual budget and expansive 1300-square-mile service area, METRO has made a priority of improving roads and streamlining routes, addingnew bus shelters with benches and revamping the Park & Ride lots just in time for the crowds attending the FIFA World Cup games. Anna Carpenter, METRO Director of Communications, joins us today to tell us more about theseimprovements.

4:50 pm The State of Texas has an astonishingly low rating – 43 worst out of all states – for the way it deals with child welfare – how they are being cared for and the environmentthey’re growing up in – and the school systems that are being pushed for money, with many districts closing schools even as the State offers vouchers for kids going to private schools. State Rep. Gene Wu has fought for better care of juveniles ever since he was a prosecutor with the Harris County District Attorney’s office and is a singular voice in the Texas legislature advocating for more funds for better child care. He joins us today to talk about the challenges in Texas for caring for the youth.
