“AI is my best friend”: Emma Sadlier calls on parents to engage as children choose chatbots over real-world connection during school holidays

Emma Sadlier, social media and law expert, speaks to John Maytham about growing concerns around children’s increasing use of AI chatbots, after a recent school talk with learners aged nine to thirteen where several described AI as their “best friend”. One young girl explained that she often turns to a chatbot because it is always kind to her and helps when she feels lonely, raising questions about emotional reliance on artificial intelligence at a young age. With school holidays now underway, Sadlier says this is a crucial time for parents to engage in open conversations with their children about how and why they are using AI tools, particularly as devices are often used more heavily to fill time during working hours. She warns that while technology can be helpful, it may also be reshaping how children form relationships, amid growing international concern around children’s exposure to AI-driven and algorithmic platforms.
