In the Mind of Madness: Exploring Mary Jane Jackson's Dark Legacy

Mary Jane Jackson (born 1836 – vanished around 1863) was an American serial killer, sex worker, and criminal who operated in New Orleans, Louisiana, during the 1840s through the 1860s. She earned the nickname "Bricktop" because of her striking red hair. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1836.She entered the world of prostitution at the age of 14 and became one of the most formidable women in the French Quarter of New Orleans, notorious for her violent confrontations with men who provoked her, often resulting in severe injuries or fatalities. She established her own brothel on Dauphine Street, collaborating with Delia Swift, known as Bridget Fury, as well as Ellen Collins and America Williams. On December 5, 1861, she fatally stabbed her partner, John Miller. In 1862, she was released from prison by General George Shepley, the military governor of Louisiana, who granted amnesty to all felons, after which she vanished from public view.
