The Politics of Storytelling ft Kelechi Okafor

The Politics of Storytelling ft Kelechi Okafor

Around 65,000 years ago, our ancestors painted an everyday scene on the wall of a cave in Indonesia. It tells the story of 3 human beings surrounding a pig, possibly on hunt.

In 2026, the tools, customs and cultural references might have changed, but human beings are still doing the same thing in their art- telling stories.

The stories we tell each other are so powerful- they help us understand the truth about the world around us and ultimately, who we are.

But what happens when stories are twisted, divorced from the truth and weaponised? How can we assess and critique

And in the world of books, what makes a good fictional story? is it one that tells us something about our lived reality, or one that helps us imagine beyond it?

This week we are joined by artist and author Kelechi Okafor, who knows all about storytelling. Through her books and acting, she creates captivating stories that challenge and excite and through her scoial media, she challenges and critiques the dominant narrative of the British political landscape.

Together we explore storytelling through fiction, news and everyday interactions.
