Why does patriotism seem so powerful in America—and what happens when it begins to disappear?

As Americans celebrate the nation's 250th anniversary, Alexis de Tocqueville's reflections on patriotism may be more relevant than ever.

Nearly two hundred years ago, Tocqueville traveled across the United States searching for answers about democracy, citizenship, and self-government. What he discovered led him to one of the most important insights in Democracy in America: free societies depend not only on laws and institutions, but on citizens who feel attached to their country and actively participate in its civic life.

In this special Independence Day episode of Tocqueville Talks, Beth L'Arrivée and political theorist Rob L'Arrivée explore Tocqueville's account of American patriotism and why he believed democracy depends upon it.

The conversation begins with one of the most remarkable—and little-known—moments from Tocqueville's American journey. On July 4, 1831, Tocqueville and his traveling companion Gustave de Beaumont were invited to participate in an Independence Day parade in Albany, New York. Drawing on both Tocqueville's own account and a report published in the Albany Argus, Beth and Rob reconstruct the celebration and consider what it reveals about American civic life.

Drawing on Democracy in America, the episode examines Tocqueville's distinction between two kinds of patriotism. The first is an instinctive love of country rooted in memory, custom, place, and affection. The second is a reflective patriotism that develops when citizens participate in self-government and come to see that their own well-being is tied to the prosperity of the community as a whole.
