The Newlywed Who Never Came Home: The Murder of Anna McGurk | Ep. 262

The Newlywed Who Never Came Home: The Murder of Anna McGurk | Ep. 262

On the evening of August 28, 1991, 23-year-old Anna McGurk left her job at Gloucester City Council after working a little later than usual to make up for a dental appointment earlier that day. She only had a short walk back to her car, which was parked in a council car park beside the River Severn. It was a route she'd taken countless times before, and one that should have ended with her arriving home to her husband. Instead, Anna disappeared without a trace, triggering a murder investigation that would leave the city of Gloucester asking how such a horrific crime could happen in broad daylight.

Anna's murder shocked Gloucestershire and exposed serious concerns about safety around Gloucester Docks and Castlemeads car park, where staff had previously raised fears about the isolated location. As detectives hunted for her killer, witnesses came forward describing a suspicious man seen loitering near the riverside in the days before the attack. The investigation would soon uncover a disturbing chain of events that raised difficult questions about policing, the criminal justice system and whether Anna's death could have been prevented.

In this episode of British Murders with Stuart Blues, we examine the murder of Anna McGurk. We explore Anna's life, her marriage to childhood sweetheart Brian McGurk, the timeline of her disappearance, the police investigation, the evidence that led detectives to Andrew Patrick Hagans, and the courtroom proceedings that followed. We also look at the lasting impact the case had on Gloucester, the changes made to staff safety after her death, and the parole hearings that continue to attract attention more than three decades later.
