Beyond Babysitting: Lessons from Unexpected Mentors with Kathleen Kraft

The guest on our show today isn’t one you’ve heard of (unless you already know her personally) and she’s not one with a large social media following or online newsletter. However, she is one of the most important people in my life.

Why? Well, sometimes people ask me some version of “Suzy, why are you the way that you are?” in the kindest way possible.

How are you so positive, how are you so happy, how are you so vulnerable, how are you so nonjudgmental? When asked these questions about distinct parts of my character, three people come to mind, mentors if you will, who began, molded, shaped, and perfected the aspects of Suzy.

One of them is Kathleen Kraft. In retrospect, she was absolutely a huge female mentor and energetic expander, but back in the day, my mind could only see her as my babysitter, the girl who watched me, picked me up from school, and took me to volleyball practice when I was too old to have a “babysitter” but also had two working parents who couldn’t carry out these tasks.

I really can’t wait for you to listen to Kathleen who is the embodiment of grace, who for, as long as I can remember, has faced people, ideas, and hardships with a sense of awe and wonderment where the average person would have delved into anger and judgement.

She informed the way I view religion and various faiths, romantic relationships, my body image, and my view of people who choose to live lives vastly different from my own.

The impact that she had on my life can’t be put into words and I’m truly saddened that she wasn’t your mentor too.

But hey, maybe you DID have a wonderful mentor growing up who was just like Kathleen, be sure to reach out and thank them for the role they played in shaping your identity.
