Publishers are revolting: Meta's AI bots return zero traffic

A report by DataDome reveals a significant surge in AI bot traffic, highlighting a growing disparity between how different platforms interact with the web. While Meta’s AI bots have drastically increased their crawling activity by over 163%, they reportedly provide zero referral traffic back to the websites they index, draining publisher resources without compensation. In contrast, ChatGPT has become more efficient, reducing its overall crawl frequency while accounting for the vast majority of AI-driven referrals. This shift has introduced new technical signals like the Model Context Protocol, which connects AI agents to external tools but also expands the digital attack surface for organizations. To mitigate these costs, experts suggest that website owners should implement stricter access policies and rate-limits for bots that offer no mutual value. Ultimately, the data suggests that not all AI agents impact the digital ecosystem equally, requiring a more nuanced approach to bot management.
