What if you were a brain in a vat?

What if you were a brain in a vat?

How certain are you that you are reading these words right now, or that you even possess a physical body? What if you are actually just a brain, removed from your skull by a 'malicious scientist' and placed in a vat filled with life-sustaining nutrients, wired to a super-powerful computer?

In this podcast, we explore the possibility that everything we see, hear, and feel is actually nothing more than electronic signals sent to our nerve endings by a computer. We are diving deep into one of the most unsettling thought experiments in the history of philosophy: The 'Brain in a Vat' problem.

We trace the roots of this modern nightmare, formulated by the American philosopher Hilary Putnam in 1981, back to the 17th century, where the French philosopher René Descartes imagined an 'Evil Demon' (malin génie) trying to deceive our very senses.

Is there a way to prove that we are not living in a computer simulation, just like in the movie The Matrix? According to philosophers, unfortunately, there might not be! If we cannot be absolutely certain that we aren’t a brain floating in a vat, does that mean everything we think we know about the external world could be entirely false?

How can we be sure we aren’t hallucinating or dreaming right now? Welcome to a philosophical journey that will push the boundaries of epistemology and skepticism, shaking your perception of reality to its core. Do you think we are in a vat? Share your thoughts in the comments!
