Happiness is an Active Outward Conquest

Happiness is an Active Outward Conquest

Bertrand Russell's cult classic, The Conquest of Happiness, emphasizes that happiness is not a human right handed to us on a silver platter, but rather a goal that must be "conquered" by actively participating in life and striving for it.

The troubles modern humans struggle with, such as competition, boredom, fatigue, envy, a sense of sin, and the fear of public opinion, are the fundamental causes of unhappiness that trap us in our own inner worlds. According to Russell, a "self-centered" person who lives only directed inward, constantly preoccupied with their own flaws, fears, or superiorities, has no chance of being happy.

So, what is the secret to true happiness? Russell's prescription is extremely clear: Escaping our inner prison and turning toward the outside world! Happiness lies in feeling a great zest and appetite for life, loving without expecting anything in return, finding constructive meaning in family and work life, cultivating impersonal external interests, and, most importantly, striking a delicate balance between effort and resignation.

Going beyond the empty promises of ordinary self-help books, this work of popular philosophy offers a practical guide. It advises us to rid ourselves of meaningless fears, to feel like citizens of the universe, and to lovingly merge with the river of life.

In this video, we will discover how tired and anxious modern individuals can overcome the unhappiness they create with their own hands and take a step toward a good life through Russell's timeless wisdom!
