The Banfield Affair: Murder, Betrayal & The Au Pair Who Flipped

Joseph Ryan thought he was meeting a woman for a sexual encounter. He walked into a house in Herndon, Virginia on February 24, 2023 and never walked out.

Ryan was shot twice — once by Brendan Banfield, an IRS criminal investigator, and once by Juliana Peres Magalhaes, the family's Brazilian au pair. Both shooters told police the same story: Ryan was a home invader who had just stabbed Christine Banfield to death in her bedroom. They said they killed him to protect themselves and the couple's 4-year-old daughter.

Prosecutors say none of that is true.

According to the Commonwealth of Virginia, Christine's murder was planned. They allege Brendan had been sleeping with Juliana for months and wanted his wife dead. The setup? A fake profile on FetLife — a fetish dating website — using Christine's photo to lure Ryan to the house. Ryan believed he was arriving for consensual role-play. Prosecutors say he was actually walking into a staged crime scene, meant to look like a home invasion gone wrong.

The problem for Brendan Banfield: Juliana flipped.

After a year in jail facing second-degree murder charges, the au pair took a deal. She pleaded guilty to manslaughter. She agreed to testify that Brendan handed her a gun that morning and told her to shoot Ryan if he was still moving after Brendan fired. In exchange, prosecutors recommended time served and deportation back to Brazil.

The defense calls her a liar — a desperate woman who would say anything to go home.

Now Brendan Banfield is heading to trial in January 2026, facing life in prison for double murder. His freedom depends on whether a jury believes the woman who saved herself by pointing the finger at him.

Two people are dead. One witness is talking. And her freedom was the price of her testimony.
