Mother Walks Alone Through Moscow Shops and Finds the Baby Killer: The Serial Murders of Natasha Denisyuk

Fall 1977. Five babies vanished from storefronts across Moscow, each three months old, each taken in seconds. The Soviet state imposed total silence-no newspapers, no broadcasts, no public warning. Mothers received no alert. Yet one woman, Valentina Mamina, whose daughter barely survived an abduction, made a choice: she would hunt the killer herself.

In this episode, we explore the impossible contradiction that haunted the investigation: four hundred agents mobilized by the General Secretary could not stop Anatoli Biryukov, but a civilian mother found him in three days by walking through neighborhood shops. We examine the dark truth beneath his arrest-his two prior arrests in 1971 and 1972 for identical attempts, both resulting in minimal punishment; the role of his father, General Nikolai Biryukov, a decorated Soviet war hero; and the psychiatric diagnosis that later raised questions about whether the system had simply failed to contain him.

Victim: Natasha Denisyuk and four other infants murdered
Date: September-October 1977
Location: Moscow and Chekhov, Soviet Union
Status: Perpetrator arrested and convicted

- Biryukov had been arrested twice before, in 1971 and 1972, for nearly identical baby abductions-and both times was released with minimal penalties
- Four hundred Soviet agents failed to identify him during an emergency seventy-two-hour manhunt ordered by Leonid Brezhnev
- A civilian mother, Valentina Mamina, identified Biryukov by a distinctive facial scar while walking alone through stores, three days after he attacked her daughter
- Citizens subdued him inside a children's store before police arrived, capturing the only physical evidence recovered directly from him: the dark hat he lost while fleeing
