A Prayer to Know God's Plan Is Not to Harm You

Waking up in a recovery room twelve hours after a surgery that was supposed to take six to eight, with a foggy brain and a numb body and the immediate awareness that something must have gone wrong — and then, without any effort at all, these words scrolling like closed captions across the mind: For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. It was not a verse summoned by discipline or recalled through effort. It arrived on its own, precisely when it was needed most. That moment is the beating heart of this episode.

Jeremiah 29:11 is one of the most familiar verses in Scripture, and perhaps because of that familiarity, we sometimes read past the phrase that matters most in the hardest moments: not to harm you. It is the harm we fear most — the downfall, the destruction, the decimation of our hopes and health and relationships. And while we are not promised immunity from hardship in a fallen world where the enemy still schemes, God's goodness and His plans always override whatever harm is plotted against us. The surgery did go wrong. Blood pressure tanked. Recovery stretched into weeks of unexpected dips and twists. And through all of it, the promise held: no matter what life looked like in the moment, God's plan was never to harm, and His good future would always prevail.

Today's Bible Verse

Ponder Today

1. The phrase "not to harm you" is worth sitting with in seasons of fear. When the familiar verse loses its power because it has been recited too many times, sometimes a single phrase within it can speak with fresh and specific force exactly when we need it most.
2. God's plan prevails over whatever the enemy schemes. We live in a fallen world where hardship is real and the enemy still plots against us. But God's goodness and His purposes override any harm that is intended for us. He always wins.
3. A good future is still God's plan, no matter what your current path looks like. Rocky seasons, unexpected complications, and frightening detours do not cancel what God has declared. His plans to prosper you and give you hope remain in force through all of it.

A Prayer for You Today

Lord God, Your plan is never to harm or hurt me, yet so often I feel this very fear. I want to believe with all my heart the truth that no matter where I wind up or what rocky path I find myself on, You still have good plans. Though the enemy intends to harm me, You intend to help me and lead me to a beautiful future full of Your goodness, protection, peace, and loving presence. I praise You that Your plan is the one that prevails, and that it is so, so good. In Jesus' name, Amen.
