Animal Populations in the Kruger: The Numbers

Animal Populations in the Kruger: The Numbers

Animal populations in the Kruger are so much more than just numbers on a page. This episode brings those figures to life, from the park’s nearly 150 mammal species and over 500 bird species, to the quieter reptiles, amphibians, and fish that keep this vast ecosystem in balance. It looks at how a landscape once ravaged by overhunting became one of Africa’s great wildlife sanctuaries, and how careful protection over more than a century has allowed many species to bounce back.

You’ll hear how abundant some animals have become, with impala herds estimated at around 180 000, elephants at roughly 17 000, buffalo at about 48 000, and healthy populations of lions and leopards that make Big 5 sightings feel wonderfully possible on any given day. At the same time, the episode doesn’t shy away from the rarities: cheetahs and African wild dogs that move like ghosts across huge distances, elusive black rhinos, and shy creatures like pangolins, sable, roan, aardvark, and aardwolf that most visitors will only ever dream of seeing.

Along the way, it touches on the species under the most pressure, especially rhinos and vultures, and why every visit to the Kruger helps support ongoing conservation work. If you’ve ever wondered what truly lives within those 19 485 km² of wilderness, or what your chances are of seeing everything from glossy starlings to a pride of lions, this episode will draw you into the living, breathing tapestry of life that makes the Kruger so unforgettable—and might just give you the final nudge to plan your own safari.
