"Throw reason to the dogs..": Gender Apartheid and the Erasure of Afghan Women, pt.2

In this episode, we take a look at the reality of life in Afghanistan under the Taliban's first reign from 1996 to 2001, through a historical and feminist lens. Moving past the savioristic and imperial themes, we look at human cost through the archives of the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA) and investigative reporting like Beneath the Veil, and Unholy War. The rise of the Taliban is discussed, along with their war crimes and alliance with al-Qaeda, the devastating scorched-earth campaigns across the north, and the super- risky acts of everyday resistance by women fighting to survive. Finally, we examine the immediate, grim fallout of Ahmad Shah Massoud’s assassination and the chilling warnings RAWA issued right as the world changed on September 11, 2001. Tune in as we break down what daily life looked like under a totalitarian theocracy.
