Here are the facts. Joseph Duggar, thirty-one, seventh of nineteen Duggar children, faces two felony counts in Bay County, Florida — one a life felony involving a girl who was nine years old at the time. He has pleaded not guilty. Police say he admitted it twice, including on a recorded call. His parents posted the six-hundred-thousand-dollar bond.

The relatives who went to police are the Caldwells, the family Kendra grew up in. Her father is a Baptist pastor. In 2003, when this family faced a nearly identical crisis with a different son, the answer was a quiet talk with a family friend instead of a police report. That friend is now serving fifty-six years. The Caldwells chose the opposite path. And they are still paying for it.
