Why Patrick Clancy Is Testifying For His Wife's Defense

Lindsay Clancy's husband found their three children dead. Now he's about to take the stand for her.
Patrick Clancy discovered Cora, five, Dawson, three, and Callan, eight months, in their Duxbury, Massachusetts home in January 2023. Lindsay Clancy has conceded she killed them. What's contested in Plymouth Superior Court is whether she knew right from wrong at the time, and Patrick has landed on the side of the woman accused of ending his children's lives.
He's filed a wrongful death lawsuit, not against Lindsay, but against the healthcare providers who treated her in the months leading up to that day. Court filings describe a woman prescribed at least ten different medications in four months, hospitalized three times, and turned away by a crisis hotline after asking for help. She told providers she was having thoughts of harming her children. A hospital assessment cleared her of bipolar disorder; a forensic evaluation after the killings found she had Bipolar Disorder I with psychosis and postpartum onset.
Her attorney tried to split the trial into two phases, guilt first, sanity second, so the jury wouldn't hear the concession and the psychosis evidence in the same breath. The judge said no. The judge also blocked other mothers who've experienced postpartum psychosis from testifying about what it's like from the inside.
Prosecutors, meanwhile, point to a fitness tracker and a mapping app they say prove Lindsay was calculating, not spiraling, in the moments before it happened.
