Episode 105: The Black Knight Satellite — 13,000 Years in Orbit

The claim is extraordinary: that there is an object in polar orbit around the Earth that has been there for approximately 13,000 years — long before humanity possessed the technology to place anything in space — and that it is not of human origin. The Black Knight Satellite, as it has come to be known, has accumulated one of the more peculiar documentary histories in conspiracy culture: fragments of genuinely puzzling cold war signals intelligence, a set of NASA photographs from a 1998 Space Shuttle mission, and decades of interpretation layered upon interpretation until the original, more mundane facts are almost impossible to locate beneath the accretion of mythology. In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we excavate the Black Knight story — examining what was actually observed, when, and by whom, and what the balance of evidence suggests about the most famous alleged alien artefact in Earth orbit.

The story has multiple origin points that have been retrospectively welded into a single narrative. In 1899, Nikola Tesla reported receiving regular, structured signals at his Colorado Springs laboratory that he initially interpreted as possibly extraterrestrial in origin — though he later modified this interpretation. In 1954, newspapers including Aviation Week reported that the US military had detected two satellites in orbit — a finding that was remarkable because neither the United States nor the Soviet Union had yet launched a satellite. Sputnik would not fly until 1957. The official explanation for these 1954 reports was radar return artefacts. Critics of that explanation note that the Air Force's statement came with an unusual speed and firmness for something ostensibly trivial.

James Oberg and other space historians have examined the 1954 reports in detail and concluded that they were almost certainly misidentified radar echoes or classified early reconnaissance balloon programmes. The Tesla signal connection is even more tenuous — Tesla's own later writings suggest he came to believe the signals were natural phenomena from Mars or Venus, not an alien satellite.

The most visually compelling element of the Black Knight myth is a set of photographs taken during STS-88, the first Space Shuttle mission to the International Space Station, in December 1998. Several images show a dark, irregular object floating in space near the shuttle. NASA's explanation is straightforward and documented: the object is a thermal blanket that was lost during a spacewalk — a piece of equipment identified by serial number, catalogued as debris, and eventually tracked until it re-entered the atmosphere. The Black Knight interpretation requires accepting that NASA misidentified its own lost equipment as debris and has maintained this position across decades of scrutiny.
