The People Bryan Kohberger Blames For His Confession

The People Bryan Kohberger Blames For His Confession

Bryan Kohberger is not blaming the evidence. He is blaming the people who told him to sign.

In a handwritten petition for post-conviction relief filed in Ada County District Court, Kohberger claims he received ineffective assistance from his defense team. He says evidence in his favor was never disclosed or reviewed. He says he was convinced to confess to something he did not do. He is representing himself. He told the New York Times his actual innocence is his truth.

Tony Brueski and Robin Dreeke, retired FBI Special Agent and former chief of the Bureau's Counterintelligence Behavioral Analysis Program, work through who exactly is being accused here and what that accusation costs.

Anne Taylor represented Kohberger at the time of the plea. Her office has declined to comment. She is being blamed in the national press by a former client while her own ethics rules keep her from answering a word of it. That happens to defense lawyers every time a client turns, and almost nobody covers it.

The breakdown also covers the rest of the filing. He claims he was given a distorted account of what a life sentence and death row in Idaho would look like. And he says he would welcome prosecutors seeking the death penalty against him again, which is the outcome the plea deal existed to prevent.

The four students killed in Moscow in November 2022 were Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin. There was never a trial, never a cross-examination, and no motive was ever required of him. Everything the public knows about that night comes from investigators, and Kohberger now calls their account a work of fiction.
