Survivor’s Guilt After Ramadi Stay Zero Podcast EP41 Romeo Santiago

Survivor’s Guilt After Ramadi Stay Zero Podcast EP41 Romeo Santiago

Marine Scout Sniper veteran Romeo Santiago joins Zac for an honest conversation about combat, survivor’s guilt, fatherhood, trauma, and the search for a meaningful mission after military service.Romeo begins with his childhood in the Philippines, immigrating to the United States at age ten, and the bullying and cultural adjustment he experienced in school. He explains why he joined the Marine Corps, how he overcame early physical struggles, and the unexpected path that led him to become a Scout Sniper and team leader with 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines. The conversation then turns to Romeo’s 2004 deployment to Ramadi, Iraq. He recounts the escalation of violence surrounding the Battle of Ramadi, the difficult decisions made in combat, and the loss of four Marines at an observation post after his team was divided between simultaneous missions. More than two decades later, Romeo continues to wrestle with responsibility, grief, shame, and the belief that he should have done more to protect the men under his leadership.Romeo and Zac explore how combat conditioning can follow veterans home through hypervigilance, anger, perfectionism, emotional avoidance, and the need to remain constantly busy. They discuss the body’s response to trauma, the importance of recognizing nervous-system activation, and why grief—including allowing yourself to cry—can be a necessary part of returning to a sense of safety.Romeo also shares his difficult transition out of the Marine Corps, his eventual career in law enforcement, and his work investigating sex crimes and internet crimes against children. Drawing from that experience, he offers parents a direct perspective on online safety, social media, gaming platforms, and the importance of having honest, age-appropriate conversations with their children. At the center of this episode is Romeo’s Keep the Promise Challenge: a planned 170-mile endurance event consisting of 34 miles per day for five consecutive days, April 6–10, marking the 22nd anniversary of the Battle of Ramadi. Each day’s 34 miles represents the service members whose lives and sacrifices Romeo is determined to keep from being forgotten. The challenge is more than an ultramarathon. It is Romeo’s decision to stop hiding from grief, reconnect with the military and Gold Star family communities, and turn guilt into service. The effort also supports an organization providing long-term, individualized assistance to wounded, ill, and injured service members, veterans, and their families. The episode closes with a candid discussion about fatherhood, raising teenagers, rebuilding patience after military service, finding purpose in helping others, and the frightening question many veterans face when the mission finally ends: What happens when life becomes quiet? The episode opens with Zac discussing his book, “When the Medicine Wears Off: Trauma, Psychedelics, and the Integration That Follows,” and the importance of approaching psychedelic healing and integration safely._________________The Stay Zero Podcast is a product of Zero Foxtrot, a veteran founded and operated apparel company in Austin, Texas.Learn more about the Zero Life: https://www.zerofoxtrot.com/Join the online community.Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/zulufucxs/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/zerofoxtrotSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/user/313udvg...
