The Federal Reserve System was created in 1913 by an act of Congress and signed into law by President Woodrow Wilson. It is described as the central bank of the United States, responsible for monetary policy, financial stability, and the supply of currency. What it is not, despite its name, is a government institution in the straightforward sense. The Federal Reserve is a hybrid: its Board of Governors is a federal agency, appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate, but its twelve regional Reserve Banks are private institutions, owned by member commercial banks. The Federal Reserve does not appear on any government balance sheet. Its profits — after expenses — are returned to the Treasury, but its structure, its independence, and its ownership model have been a source of political controversy since the moment of its creation.

In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine the Federal Reserve conspiracy — the claim, in various forms, that the Fed represents a privatisation of the money supply by a cartel of banking interests, that its creation in 1913 was the product of a secret conspiracy by a handful of financial dynasties, and that the ability to create money from nothing and lend it at interest constitutes a form of control over governments and populations that makes conventional political power look trivial by comparison.

The historical origins of the Federal Reserve are genuinely conspiratorial in the plain sense: they involved a secret meeting. In November 1910, Senator Nelson Aldrich and a group of the most senior bankers in the United States — representing J.P. Morgan, the Rockefellers, Kuhn Loeb & Company, and several European banking houses — travelled in a private railway car to Jekyll Island, Georgia, under assumed names to draft what became the Federal Reserve Act. The secrecy was deliberate: the participants knew that a bill visibly authored by Wall Street bankers would not survive public scrutiny. The Jekyll Island meeting was not publicly acknowledged for decades. When it was, supporters of the Fed argued that the secrecy reflected practical caution, not sinister purpose. Critics argued that legislation affecting every dollar in the American economy should not be drafted in secret by the people who stood to benefit most from its passage.

G. Edward Griffin's influential 1994 book The Creature from Jekyll Island presents the most comprehensive version of the conspiracy case. Griffin argues that the Federal Reserve functions as a cartel that enables banks to inflate the money supply for profit, that the business cycle of boom and bust is a feature rather than a bug of the system, and that the ability to create currency allows the banking establishment to fund wars and control governments in ways the public does not understand. His book has sold millions of copies and remains the foundational text of the anti-Fed movement.
