Black Hole Stars: The Impossible Objects That Blur the Line Between Star and Abyss

The James Webb Space Telescope has found compact, unusually red objects in the early universe, some with spectra that point toward rapidly accreting black holes surrounded by dense gas. One candidate, GLIMPSE-17775, has been described by NASA as strong evidence for a possible black hole star: not a normal star, not a standard quasar, but a black hole inside a hot cocoon that absorbs and reprocesses its radiation. This Webb-era candidate connects to an older theoretical idea: the quasi-star, a strange early-universe object in which a black hole forms inside a vast stellar envelope and grows rapidly while the envelope is held up by energy released near the event horizon. Quasi-stars could help explain how supermassive black holes reached millions or billions of solar masses within the first billion years after the Big Bang. But the evidence is still incomplete. Little red dots may also be compact galaxies, dusty active nuclei, unusual accretion disks, or mixtures of stars and black hole light.
