This is the Hollow Earth theory, one of the oldest and most geographically imaginative claims in all of conspiracy culture, with roots in ancient mythology, a lineage through serious eighteenth-century science, and a present-day community of believers who connect it to UFO sightings, ancient civilisations, and the journeys of Admiral Richard Byrd. In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we trace the Hollow Earth from its origins through its scientific refutation and into its modern forms — and ask why the idea of a world beneath our world continues to captivate human imagination.

The intellectual history of hollow earth theory is genuinely interesting. Edmund Halley — of Halley's Comet fame — proposed in 1692 that the Earth consisted of a series of concentric shells, each potentially habitable, separated by gaseous layers. He was attempting to explain geomagnetic anomalies he had observed and could not account for with contemporary geology. Halley was not a crank. He was one of the finest scientists of his age. His proposal was wrong, but it was made in the context of genuine scientific uncertainty about the Earth's interior. John Cleves Symmes Jr., an American army officer, took this tradition further in the early nineteenth century, lobbying Congress to fund an expedition to the polar openings he believed existed at the North and South Poles. He failed to secure funding but generated considerable public interest.

The literary treatment of hollow earth is extensive — Jules Verne's Journey to the Centre of the Earth is the most famous, but Edgar Rice Burroughs' Pellucidar series imagined an entire civilisation beneath the crust. These fictions contributed to the mythology that surrounding hollow earth belief: the idea that advanced beings live below, that they emerge through polar openings, and that their existence has been suppressed by governments worried about the implications.

The Admiral Byrd connection — which also appears in the Nazi Antarctic base episode — holds that Byrd penetrated a polar opening during one of his expeditions and encountered a warm, forested inner world. The account is attributed to a "secret diary" that has never been produced as a verifiable document and which appears to have circulated in conspiracy literature from the 1970s onward without a traceable origin. Byrd's actual diary and records from his expeditions are held by the Ohio State University archives and contain no such account.
