I'm Worried Police Don't Understand Child Abuse, So I Spoke to Them

I'm Worried Police Don't Understand Child Abuse, So I Spoke to Them

To watch this on YouTube - https://youtu.be/Pfra-rn7M3w

In this presentation, I speak to approximately 100 police officers about my experience of reporting historic child abuse and the lessons I believe could help improve the way these cases are investigated.

Using a series of real-life analogies and personal experiences, I explore topics including:

• Why victims often struggle to remember childhood abuse in detail.

• Why children don't always recognise abuse as abuse.

• Why disclosure can take years or even decades.

• How emotions can resurface during police interviews.

• My own police investigation and why it resulted in No Further Action (NFA).

• Questions I've been left asking about the investigation process and safeguarding after cases don't reach court.

My aim isn't to criticise individual officers. It's to contribute to the conversation about how we can better understand victims and continue improving investigations into child abuse cases.

If this video makes you think differently, I'd encourage you to share it with someone else. Conversations are how understanding grows.
