Abune Gebre Menfes Qiddus | The Star of the Desert and What a Thousand Years of Devotion Looks Like

Abune Gebre Menfes Qiddus | The Star of the Desert and What a Thousand Years of Devotion Looks Like

His name means the Work of the Holy Spirit. He is also called Abo, the name of deep affection. He is one of the most beloved saints of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. The tradition says he was born in Egypt to parents who prayed for a child for thirty years.

That on the day of his birth he rose from his mother's arms and bowed three times to the Holy Trinity. That he lived among sixty lions and sixty leopards and his white hair grew to cover his body.

That he spent two hundred and sixty five years on a volcanic mountain in Ethiopia without food, water, or clothing. That he was blinded by the devil and healed by archangels. Whether you read these as literal history or as sacred portrait, one thing is not a legend.

Millions of people have been saying his name on the fifth of every month for a thousand years. That is the most extraordinary fact in this episode. This is his story. And theirs.
