Conservation and the Future of the Rainforest

The Great Bear Rainforest was nearly lost to industrial logging. Its protection came through a rare alliance between conservationists, Indigenous communities, and the timber industry — “one of the most significant conservation successes in modern Canadian history.”

But new threats loom: increased tanker traffic, noise, and ship strikes in whale feeding grounds. The balance between land and sea remains fragile.

As the Swell heads toward Bella Bella on the final morning, James watches sea otters drifting in kelp, mothers cradling pups on their bellies. He closes with a sentiment that defines the episode:
