Why Nancy Guthrie's Kidnapper Never Sent Her Voice

Nancy Guthrie's ransom note is public now, and the language in it doesn't sit right. Pima County released both notes the kidnapper sent, and psychotherapist Shavaun Scott, author of The Minds of Mass Killers, goes through them on this episode word by word. The first note demanded four million dollars in bitcoin, gave Savannah Guthrie a deadline, and included a line about Nancy's mother that reads more like leverage than reassurance. Scott flags the proof-of-presence details — a smartwatch on the floor, a busted floodlight — and a single slip from "we" to "me" that changes how the whole letter sounds.
Then the second note lands: it says Nancy died shortly after she was taken. If the timeline holds, that four-million-dollar demand was sent for someone who was no longer alive to ransom.
Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer joins to unpack the investigation itself. Sheriff Chris Nanos publicly got the only conviction in this case wrong — he said ten years; the real plea deal is five years of probation on two harassment counts, and sentencing hasn't even happened. Coffindaffer explains what that mistake signals about the coordination, or lack of it, between local and federal investigators who have never spoken directly.
Savannah Guthrie's latest public statement uses language that hints at something moving behind the scenes. And not far from where Nancy disappeared, another woman was attacked by someone who walked through an unlocked door in the middle of the night, matching the general build of the figure on Nancy's porch.
