Episode 116: The Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. — James Earl Ray and the Questions That Remain

On April 4th, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was shot on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. He was thirty-nine years old. He died an hour later at St. Joseph's Hospital. James Earl Ray, a fugitive and small-time criminal, was arrested two months later at Heathrow Airport in London and eventually pleaded guilty to the murder, receiving a ninety-nine year sentence. He recanted his confession within days. He spent the remaining thirty years of his life insisting that he had been framed — that he was a patsy, manipulated by a shadowy figure he knew only as "Raul," into being in the right city at the right time for someone else to fire the shot. The King family believed him. In 1999, the family pursued a civil wrongful death action and won — with a jury finding that Loyd Jowers and "others, including government agencies" had participated in a conspiracy to kill King. It is one of the only moments in American legal history when a jury formally found government involvement in the assassination of a civil rights leader.

In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. — the physical evidence, the FBI's documented campaign of harassment against King, the civil case verdict, the disputed role of James Earl Ray, and the questions that neither the official investigation nor the subsequent inquiries have satisfactorily resolved.

The FBI's relationship with Martin Luther King Jr. is not a matter of conspiracy theory. It is a documented matter of public record, established by Senate investigations, FOIA releases, and the congressional Church Committee. The FBI, under J. Edgar Hoover, had been conducting a systematic campaign to destroy King since at least 1963. The COINTELPRO programme targeted King as "the most dangerous Negro in America." FBI agents sent him an anonymous letter encouraging him to commit suicide. They wiretapped his phones and surveilled his movements. They attempted to discredit him through the media and to undermine his relationships and his marriage. Hoover personally despised King and regarded him as a communist threat. This context — a federal intelligence agency actively seeking the destruction of the man who would be murdered — is not background noise in the assassination case. It is the foreground.

The physical evidence raises real questions. A grocer named Loyd Jowers, who owned a restaurant below the Lorraine Motel, eventually claimed in a 1993 television interview that he had been hired to arrange the assassination and that Ray had not fired the fatal shot. Jowers' account shifted over time, and he profited from television appearances, reducing his credibility. But independent investigators — including William F. Pepper, who represented the King family — developed a case over decades that pointed to a different shooter, a different location, and a wider conspiracy involving Memphis police, the FBI, and military intelligence.
