The Rothschild family is, by any historical measure, one of the most extraordinary financial dynasties in history. Beginning with Mayer Amschel Rothschild in an eighteenth-century Frankfurt ghetto, the family built a banking network across five European capitals — London, Paris, Vienna, Frankfurt, and Naples — that financed the Napoleonic Wars, the construction of the Suez Canal, and the debts of multiple European governments. At their peak in the nineteenth century, the Rothschilds were the wealthiest family in the world. Their influence on European politics, through their position as indispensable creditors to sovereigns who could not otherwise fund their ambitions, was genuine, documented, and substantial. They were also Jewish. And the intersection of extraordinary financial power with Jewish identity produced, in the anti-Rothschild mythology that developed across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, one of the most persistent and deadly antisemitic tropes in modern history: that a Jewish banking family secretly controls the world.

In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine the Rothschild conspiracy — distinguishing between the documented history of the family's genuine power and the antisemitic mythology that has attached itself to that history — and asking what it means to analyse a family that is simultaneously the subject of real historical inquiry and one of the primary vectors of modern antisemitic conspiracy theory.

The documented history of Rothschild power is significant. The family's banking network in the early nineteenth century enabled a speed of financial communication across borders — through a private courier system predating the telegraph — that gave them genuine informational advantages over competitors and governments. The legend that Nathan Rothschild made a fortune by learning of Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo before the market opened is partly documented and substantially mythologised: he did take large positions in British government bonds during the Napoleonic period, and he did profit enormously. Whether he knew about Waterloo first, and precisely how, is disputed by historians. What is not disputed is that he emerged from the period as the dominant financier in Britain.

The conspiracy mythology built on this real history adds claims that the evidence does not support. That the Rothschilds own or control all of the world's central banks — including the Federal Reserve and the Bank of England. That they orchestrated both World Wars for profit. That they control governments, media, and the Israeli state. These claims appear in forms ranging from the merely conspiratorial to the explicitly genocidal, and they have been central to antisemitic ideology from the Nazis to contemporary online hate movements. The Rothschild claim functions as a shorthand: when someone blames unnamed "Rothschilds" for a geopolitical event, they are almost always deploying a coded antisemitic frame rather than making a specific historical argument.
