Episode 119: The Death of Princess Diana — Accident, Murder, or Cover-Up?

In the early hours of August 31st, 1997, Princess Diana, Dodi Fayed, and their driver Henri Paul died in a car crash inside the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in Paris. A bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, survived. Within hours, the official explanation was already in circulation: Henri Paul had been drinking, was driving too fast, and lost control while being pursued by paparazzi photographers. The investigation that followed, conducted by French authorities and subsequently reviewed by a British inquest that concluded in 2008, reached the same conclusion: an unlawful killing, but one caused by the grossly negligent driving of Henri Paul, with the pursuing vehicles contributing. The paparazzi who had been following Diana's car were charged with manslaughter, then acquitted.

Mohamed Al Fayed, Dodi's father, never accepted this verdict. He spent years and significant resources pursuing a parallel investigation that pointed to a different conclusion: that Diana had been murdered by the British establishment — specifically by the Royal Family and British intelligence — because she was pregnant with Dodi's child and on the verge of announcing an engagement to a Muslim man, in circumstances that the establishment considered intolerable. In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine the Diana case — the physical evidence, the eyewitness accounts, the intelligence angle, and what the documented record allows us to conclude.

The physical evidence produces genuine questions. Henri Paul's official blood alcohol reading — three times the legal limit — was disputed by witnesses who saw him in the hours before the crash and described him as sober and composed. His family have consistently argued that the blood samples were contaminated or swapped. The Fiat Uno that witnesses described making contact with the Mercedes before the crash was never conclusively identified. The tunnel's security cameras — thirteen of them — were not functioning on the night of the crash. The delay in getting Diana to hospital has been criticised: French emergency medical protocol involves extended on-site treatment, and Diana was in the tunnel for a substantial period before being moved.

The intelligence angle is the most dramatic element of the conspiracy theory. MI6 documents released under a FOIA-adjacent process, and the testimony of former intelligence figures, established that there were active intelligence files on Diana. Richard Tomlinson, a former MI6 officer, told the French investigation that he had seen a document describing a plan to assassinate a foreign leader — Slobodan Milošević — using a staged car crash in a tunnel, blinding the target with a strobe light. The parallels to the Diana crash were obvious, and Tomlinson's account was one of the most significant contributions to the murder theory. His testimony was disputed, his reliability questioned, and his claims ultimately not incorporated into the inquest's findings.
