Episode 121: The Trilateral Commission — Managing the World in Plain Sight

The Trilateral Commission was founded in 1973 by David Rockefeller and Zbigniew Brzezinski, with the explicit purpose of fostering closer cooperation between the three major democratic power blocs of the era: North America, Western Europe, and Japan. It brought together several hundred senior figures from business, politics, academia, and media for annual meetings, joint studies, and the development of policy positions on issues of global concern. It was, from the beginning, entirely unelected. Its founding was not subject to democratic process. Its decisions were not subject to public scrutiny. And its membership — over its fifty-year history — has included multiple US presidents and vice-presidents, secretaries of state, senior central bankers, and the executives of major multinational corporations. For conspiracy theorists, the Trilateral Commission represents something the Bilderberg Group was always accused of being but could more easily deny: an organisation that openly announces itself as a vehicle for elite coordination of global affairs, while systematically excluding everyone outside its own network from participation.

In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine the Trilateral Commission — what it does, who belongs to it, what its own documents say about its purpose, and the specific claims that it functions as a shadow government directing the foreign and economic policies of the Western democracies.

The Trilateral Commission's own 1975 report, The Crisis of Democracy — authored by Samuel Huntington, Michel Crozier, and Joji Watanuki — is among the most cited documents in the anti-Trilateral literature, and for reasons that are not conspiratorial but textual. The report argued, explicitly, that democracies were experiencing an "excess of democracy" — that too much political participation, too many demands on government, and too much media scrutiny were undermining the ability of governing elites to make effective decisions. It called for measures to reduce "the democratic surge" of the 1960s and restore what it called "governability." For critics, this was an elite policy network explicitly calling for the reduction of democratic participation as a solution to the problem of democracy.

Jimmy Carter was a member of the Trilateral Commission before becoming president. He then appointed Brzezinski as his National Security Advisor and filled numerous senior positions with fellow Trilateralists, prompting critics including Barry Goldwater to describe his administration as "David Rockefeller's appointees." Ronald Reagan ran against the Trilateral Commission in the 1980 primaries as part of his outsider positioning, then appointed his own Trilateral members to senior positions. The pattern of membership-to-appointment has repeated across administrations, offering evidence for either the revolving door interpretation or the simpler observation that the Commission draws from the same talent pool as governments do.
