Episode 125: Simulation Theory — Are We Living in a Computer Programme?

In 2003, Oxford philosopher Nick Bostrom published a paper titled "Are You Living in a Computer Simulation?" The argument was straightforward and its implications were not: if it is possible to create a sufficiently detailed simulation of conscious beings, and if technologically advanced civilisations would have the incentive and capability to run large numbers of such simulations, then the number of simulated conscious beings would vastly outnumber the number of "real" ones — and the statistical probability that any given conscious being is in the base reality, rather than in a simulation, would be vanishingly small. The argument is not science fiction. It is formal philosophy, published in a peer-reviewed journal, and it has attracted engagement from physicists, cosmologists, and philosophers serious enough that Elon Musk has described the odds of our reality being base reality as one in billions. In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine simulation theory — the philosophical argument, the scientific evidence some have claimed to find for it, and the conspiracy-adjacent question of whether, if we are in a simulation, someone designed it and might be manipulating it.

The simulation argument sits at an unusual intersection between analytic philosophy and the kind of metaphysical speculation that would otherwise be confined to religious or conspiratorial frameworks. It is taken seriously by serious people. This is partly because the alternative — a spontaneously arising universe with the specific physical constants required for the existence of conscious observers — requires its own extraordinary assumptions. A simulation, in some framings, is simply a more coherent account of why the universe has the specific properties it has.

The scientific evidence that has been cited in support of simulation theory includes the pixel-like structure of space-time at the Planck scale — the apparent existence of a minimum unit of space below which measurement becomes meaningless, reminiscent of the resolution limit of a digital system. It includes the apparent fine-tuning of physical constants — the gravitational constant, the electromagnetic force, the cosmological constant — to values that permit the existence of complex matter and life, in a range so narrow that random chance seems an inadequate explanation. And it includes the findings of quantum mechanics: the apparent observer-dependence of quantum states, and the way that unmeasured particles exist in superposition, resolving into definite values only when observed, which some have interpreted as evidence that the universe only renders its detail when "looked at."

These scientific observations do not establish simulation theory. The Planck scale is a feature of quantum gravity that does not require a digital substrate. The fine-tuning argument is addressed by multiverse theory. The observer-dependence of quantum mechanics is interpreted differently by different interpretations of quantum theory. None of these are settled questions, but none of them require a simulator.
