Ki Tetzei and Elul: The God of the Breast — Eil Sha-dai and the Field of Return

Ki Tetzei and Elul: The God of the Breast — Eil Sha-dai and the Field of Return

In this episode of Underneath the Underneath, Yocheved arrives at Parshat Ki Tetzei with a chidush that stops everything: the Hebrew root of sadeh — field — is the same as Shadai. Eil Shadai. The God of the breast.

The king in the field, the classic Elul teaching, turns out to be more than a metaphor for accessibility. The field is the place of the nurturing God — the divine who feeds, who sustains, who knows exactly when you are full and says die*, enough. Not abandonment. Deep attunement.*

Drawing on the thirteen attributes of mercy, four mitzvot from Ki Tetzei, and the arc from Elul into Rosh Hashana, Yocheved traces what it means to be held by Eil Shadai before standing before Havayah. The womb before the throne. The mother before the king.

The milk is already flowing. The field is already receiving. The practice is not feeling it — it’s turning toward what already is.

__________

Deepen with Ohmek:

Ohmek is a community of women and men pursuing deeper ways of being.

It is the space that holds all, yet remains empty, the void that allows healing and transformation to take place, take shape, belong, integrate and disperse.

It is an invitation inward, into a space and community, as well as one’s own inner world. A place to be stretched and to come together, to feel at home in exploration, with room to be and to breathe.

At our upstate retreat center and Brooklyn locations, in our sacred gatherings, healing containers and embodied mysticism classes, we invite you into spiritual experiences and sacred spaces that allow us — collectively and individually — to explore our own depths, underneath the underneath.
