Murder In Moscow: Xana's Mother And Her Interview With News Night

Xana Kernodle’s mother, Cara Northington, said she had felt blindsided and betrayed after learning that public defender Anne Taylor, who had been representing her in an unrelated criminal case, had withdrawn and become the lead attorney for Bryan Kohberger, the man then accused of murdering Xana and three other University of Idaho students. Northington said she had trusted Taylor and believed the attorney had been trying to help her, making the discovery particularly painful. She also said Taylor had held power of attorney for her during portions of their attorney-client relationship. Court records showed that Taylor had represented Northington on misdemeanor drug-related charges before withdrawing from that case around the same time she was appointed to represent Kohberger. Northington said she had not been personally notified beforehand and learned about the situation through other sources, describing it as another devastating development following her daughter’s killing.

The situation immediately raised questions about whether Taylor’s prior representation of Northington created a conflict of interest in the Kohberger case, although Taylor’s withdrawal from Northington’s matter meant the two representations did not continue simultaneously. Northington nevertheless viewed the situation in deeply personal terms, saying it was difficult to accept that someone she had trusted with her own legal problems was now defending the man accused of killing her daughter. The controversy illustrated the complicated realities of Idaho’s public-defense system, where a relatively small pool of attorneys qualified to handle capital cases could create overlapping professional relationships. Taylor remained Kohberger’s attorney despite the uproar, while Northington was assigned different counsel in her own case. At the time, the episode added another layer of tension to an already emotionally charged prosecution, with the victim’s mother publicly questioning how an attorney who had represented her could turn around and defend the person accused of taking her daughter’s life.
