Episode 126: The Assassination of Malcolm X — FBI, NYPD, and the Men Who Were Never Charged

On February 21st, 1965, Malcolm X was shot and killed while delivering a speech at the Audubon Ballroom in Harlem, New York. Three men were convicted of the murder: Talmadge Hayer, Norman 3X Butler, and Thomas 15X Johnson. Hayer confessed to the shooting and confirmed his guilt. Butler and Johnson consistently maintained their innocence. In 2021 — fifty-six years after the assassination — a Manhattan judge vacated the convictions of Butler and Johnson, following a reinvestigation that concluded the FBI and NYPD had withheld evidence that would likely have changed the outcome of the trial. The two surviving men, both elderly, were exonerated. The reinvestigation did not fully establish who commissioned the murder. In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine the assassination of Malcolm X — the documented failures of the original investigation, the role of the FBI's COINTELPRO programme, the NYPD's infiltration of Malcolm X's security team, and the question of who, beyond the gunmen, bears responsibility for his death.

The FBI's COINTELPRO programme, which we have examined in the context of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination, was also actively targeting Malcolm X. Bureau documents show that COINTELPRO operations were specifically designed to foment conflict between the Nation of Islam — from which Malcolm X had split — and his new Organisation of Afro-American Unity. Agents wrote anonymous letters designed to inflame tensions between the groups. Malcolm X had received death threats from Nation of Islam figures. FBI informants were present in the Audubon Ballroom on the day of the assassination, and the Bureau received intelligence about the planned attack before it occurred. What the Bureau did with that intelligence, and why it did not act to prevent the killing of a man it was actively surveilling, has never been satisfactorily explained.

The NYPD's role is equally troubling. It has since emerged that an undercover NYPD officer, Raymond Wood, who died in 2020, left a statement claiming he had been ordered to infiltrate Malcolm X's security team and distract key members on the day of the assassination, creating a gap in security that the shooters exploited. Wood's family published the statement in 2021. The NYPD has not acknowledged the claim or provided records relating to Wood's assignment.

The 2021 exonerations were the result of a joint investigation between the Manhattan District Attorney's office and a team of documentarians working on a Netflix series about the assassination. The investigation found that the FBI had withheld from the original trial team documents from its own COINTELPRO files and from an informant known to be inside the group responsible for the shooting. It found that the NYPD had similarly withheld relevant intelligence. The identity of the additional shooters — beyond Hayer — and their organisational connections were not established by the reinvestigation.
