Episode 128: The Iran-Contra Affair — The Conspiracy That Was True

This episode carries one of the more straightforward labels available to this podcast: TRUE. The Iran-Contra affair was a real conspiracy — not alleged, not speculated, not the product of pattern recognition applied to ambiguous evidence. It was a criminal enterprise conducted within the executive branch of the United States government, in which officials secretly sold weapons to Iran — a country that was under arms embargo and had taken American hostages — and used the profits to fund the Contras, a right-wing insurgency in Nicaragua, in direct violation of a congressional prohibition. It was conducted by senior White House staff, overseen by the National Security Council, and concealed from Congress. When it was exposed, the cover-up was systematic and partially successful. Several participants were convicted. Most of the convictions were subsequently vacated or pardoned. No one went to prison for more than three years.

In this episode of The Conspiracy Theory Analyst, we examine Iran-Contra in detail — not as a conspiracy theory but as a documented conspiracy — and ask what it tells us about how power operates, how accountability functions, and what happens when the government that is supposed to investigate executive criminality is itself implicated.

The Iran-Contra affair operated through a private covert network that had been built by National Security Council staffer Oliver North and CIA director William Casey, with the approval — contested in degree — of President Ronald Reagan. The network involved foreign middlemen, private arms dealers, a Swiss bank account, and a logistics operation that ran through a front company called the Enterprise. The profits from the Iranian arms sales — conducted at inflated prices — were deposited into bank accounts controlled by North and used to purchase weapons for the Contras, the military opposition to the Sandinista government in Nicaragua, after Congress had explicitly prohibited military aid to the Contras through the Boland Amendment.

When the affair was exposed in November 1986, following a Lebanese newspaper report on the arms sales, the administration's initial response was denial. Reagan claimed he had not traded arms for hostages. Internal documents subsequently released established that he had been briefed on the operation. Attorney General Edwin Meese conducted what critics described as a preliminary investigation whose primary purpose was to allow participants to shred documents before an independent counsel could be appointed. Oliver North confirmed that he and his secretary Fawn Hall had destroyed relevant documents. Those documents were never recovered.

Lawrence Walsh, the independent counsel appointed to investigate Iran-Contra, secured eleven convictions. Most were subsequently overturned on procedural grounds. Oliver North's conviction was vacated. John Poindexter's conviction was vacated. Robert McFarlane received probation. Caspar Weinberger was pardoned by President George H.W. Bush before his trial began.
